Thành ngữ Achilles' heel dùng để chỉ điểm yếu (weakness), điểm dễ tổn thương của con người (về cả nghĩa đen và nghĩa bóng). Thành ngữ này có nguồn gốc từ một câu chuyện thần thoại nổi tiếng. Thời Hy lạp cổ đại, có một chiến binh siêu phàm, bách chiến bách thắng tên là Asin (Achilles)-con của nữ thần biển - Thetis với vua Hy Lạp - Peleus. Khi Asin còn nhỏ, vì muốn con mình trở nên bất tử (immortal) và cơ thể khỏe mạnh như thành đồng da sắt, Thetis đã nhúng người Asin xuống nước sông Styx mầu nhiệm, nhưng vì nữ thần dùng
hai tay nắm lấy gót chân con nên nước không thấm ướt phần này. Người chiến binh tưởng chừng không thể đánh bại của Hy Lạp đã bị kẻ thù giết chết bằng một mũi tên độc bắn trúng gót. Và thành ngữ 'gót chân Asin' (Achilles' heel ) ra đời từ đây nhằm nói bất kỳ ai cũng đều có điểm yếu (weak points) cho dù họ có mạnh đến đâu đi chăng nữa (inspite of overall strength).
